{"id":4533,"date":"2025-04-03T13:03:32","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T13:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/raqeeb.ps\/en\/?p=4533"},"modified":"2025-04-03T13:03:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T13:03:32","slug":"israels-war-on-gaza-deadliest-conflict-ever-for-journalists-says-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raqeeb.ps\/en\/4533.html","title":{"rendered":"Israel\u2019s war on Gaza deadliest conflict ever for journalists, says report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Israel\u2019s war on Gaza has killed 232 journalists \u2013 an average of 13 per week \u2013 making it the deadliest conflict for media workers ever recorded, according to a report by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs\u2019 Costs of War project.<\/p>\n<p>More journalists have been killed in Gaza than in both world wars, the Vietnam War, the wars in Yugoslavia and the United States war in Afghanistan combined, the report published on Tuesday found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is, quite simply, the worst ever conflict for reporters,\u201d said the Costs of War.<\/p>\n<p>The report said it was unclear how many Palestinian journalists in Gaza have been specifically targeted by Israeli attacks and \u201chow many were simply the victims, like tens of thousands of fellow civilians, of Israel\u2019s bombardment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, it cites the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) as documenting 35 cases where Israel\u2019s military likely targeted and killed journalists because of their work by the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was Al Jazeera reporter Hamza Dahdouh, who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/1\/7\/hamza-son-of-al-jazeeras-wael-dahdouh-killed-in-israeli-attack-in-gaza\">killed on January 7, 2024<\/a>\u00a0when a missile struck the vehicle he was travelling in in southern Gaza. He was the fifth immediate family member of Wael Dahdouh, Al Jazeera\u2019s Gaza bureau chief, to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/1\/to-kill-a-family-the-loss-of-wael-dahdouhs-family-to-israeli-bombs\">killed by Israeli attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A more recent case is Al Jazeera\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/24\/al-jazeera-journalist-killed-in-israeli-strikes-in-northern-gaza\">reporter Hossam Shabat<\/a>, killed on March 24 when an Israeli strike hit his car.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s military accused Shabat of being a secret Hamas operative, a claim the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says Israel has repeatedly levied against Palestinian journalists without evidence to justify their killing or mistreatment.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks on journalists in Gaza, where nearly no foreign correspondents have been granted access, have intensified a trend where local reporters \u2013 often underpaid and underresourced \u2013 face the greatest risks, according to the Costs of War project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross the globe, the economics of the industry, the violence of war, and coordinated censorship campaigns are turning more conflict zones into news graveyards, with Gaza being the most extreme example,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0Al Jazeera<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israel\u2019s war on Gaza has killed 232 journalists \u2013 an average of 13 per week \u2013 making it the deadliest conflict for media workers ever recorded, according to a report by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs\u2019 Costs of War project.
