For more information, read our <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2023\/11\/faq-how-cpj-documents-journalist-deaths-in-the-war\/\">FAQ<\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-7\">\n<article id=\"post-321571\" class=\"post-321571 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-uncategorized-en tag-attacked tag-detained tag-gaza tag-injured tag-israelandtheoccupiedpalestinianterritory tag-israel-gaza-war tag-killed tag-saeed-al-taweel location-israel-and-the-occupied-palestinian-territory location-mideast publication-news\">The Israel-Gaza war has taken a severe toll on journalists since Hamas launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-67039975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: unprecedented&amp;nbsp;attack\">unprecedented\u00a0attack<\/a>\u00a0against Israel on October 7 and Israel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/08\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-attack-hostages-response-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: declared war\">declared war<\/a>\u00a0on the militant Palestinian group, launching strikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>CPJ is investigating all reports of journalists and media workers killed, injured, or missing in the war, which\u00a0has led to the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>As of April 23, 2024, CPJ\u2019s preliminary investigations showed at least 97 journalists and media workers were among the\u00a0more than 35,000 killed since the war began on October 7\u2014with more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochaopt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: 34,000 Palestinian death\">34,000 Palestinian death<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-22\/israeli-air-strikes-kill-24-in-rafah-gaza-health-officials-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: s\">s<\/a> in Gaza and the West Bank and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-revises-death-toll-oct-7-hamas-attack-around-1200-2023-11-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: 1,200 deaths\">1,200 deaths<\/a> in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Reuters and Agence France Press news agencies in October that it could not guarantee the safety of their journalists operating in the Gaza Strip, after they had sought assurances that their journalists would not be targeted by Israeli strikes, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israeli-military-says-it-cant-guarantee-journalists-safety-gaza-2023-10-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: Reuters\">Reuters<\/a> report.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists in Gaza face particularly\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-gaza-hamas-militants-conflict-war-b6ea877aa1ee96303aa0870d741da777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: high\">high<\/a>\u202frisks as they try to cover the conflict during the Israeli <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-hamas-war-news-11-15-2023-b85e828db648f5f911278fa217e827e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"External link: ground assault\">ground assault<\/a>, including devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, supply shortages, and extensive power outages.<\/p>\n<p>As of April 23:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>97 journalists and media workers were confirmed dead: 92 Palestinian, 2 Israeli, and 3 Lebanese.<\/li>\n<li>16 journalists were reported injured.<\/li>\n<li>4 journalists were reported missing.<\/li>\n<li>25 journalists were reported <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2023\/11\/attacks-arrests-threats-censorship-the-high-risks-of-reporting-the-israel-hamas-war\/\">arrested<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2023\/10\/attacks-arrests-threats-censorship-the-high-risks-of-reporting-the-israel-hamas-war\/\">Multiple assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of family members<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CPJ is also investigating numerous unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed, missing, detained, hurt, or threatened, and of damage to media offices and journalists\u2019 homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price\u2014 their lives\u2014to defend our right to the truth.\u00a0Each time a journalist dies or is injured,\u00a0we lose a fragment of\u00a0that truth,\u201d said CPJ Program Director Carlos Mart\u00ednez de la Serna in New York. \u201cJournalists are civilians who are\u00a0protected by international\u00a0humanitarian law in times of conflict. Those responsible\u00a0for their deaths face dual trials: one under international law and another before history\u2019s unforgiving gaze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The list published here includes names based on information obtained from CPJ\u2019s sources in the region and media reports. It includes all journalists* involved in news-gathering activity. It is unclear whether all of these journalists were covering the conflict at the time of their deaths, but CPJ has included them in our count as we investigate their circumstances.
